Corel - Fast ways to copy and position objects

If you want to copy one or more objects within CorelDRAW® X3, you can use a faster method than copying and pasting. Here are two fast ways to copy objects:

  • Use the Duplicate command.
  • Use the new Step and Repeat docker to create and position multiple copies at one time.

Let's take a closer look at these options.

Duplicating objects

Duplicating an object with CorelDRAW creates a copy of a selected object and positions the copy according to the offset distance that you set. Unlike copying and pasting, duplicating does not place a copy of the object on the Clipboard, and it allows you to control where the copy is placed in your drawing. With CorelDRAW X3, setting an offset distance for the duplicate is easier than ever.

To duplicate an object

  1. Select one or more objects.
  2. Click Edit > Duplicate (or Ctrl + D).
When you duplicate objects for the first time in CorelDRAW X3, the Duplicate offset dialog box appears. To specify the distance between the duplicate and the original object along the x-axis and y-axis, type values in the Horizontal offset and Vertical offset boxes.
Note: Offset values of 0 place the duplicate on top of the original; positive offset values place the duplicate up and to the right of the original; and negative offset values place the duplicate down and to the left of the original.

You can change the default offset for duplicates at any time. To do this, click Tools > Options, click General in the Document list of categories, and type values in the Horizontal offset and Vertical offset boxes.

Creating and positioning multiple copies

The new Step and repeat docker in CorelDRAW X3 lets you create multiple copies of an object and control how they are positioned.

To create and position multiple copies of an object

  1. Select one or more objects.
  2. Click Edit > Step and repeat.
  3. In the Step and repeat docker, type a value in the Number of copies box.
  4. In the Horizontal settings and Vertical settings areas, specify the settings you want.

Figure 1
The figure above shows the new Step and Repeat docker.

Examples:

Figure 2
The Step and Repeat docker settings for the figure above are:
Horizontal Settings: Spacing between objects, Distance = 0.25"; Direction = Right
Vertical Settings: No offset

Figure 3
The Step and Repeat docker settings for the figure above are:
Horizontal Settings: No offset
Vertical Settings: Offset, Distance = –0.5"

Figure 4
The Step and Repeat docker settings for the figure above are:
Horizontal Settings: Offset, Distance = 0.25"
Vertical Settings: Offset, Distance = –0.25"

Ulead GIF Animator - Creating a Banner Advertisement

Using Text Tool and Split Text

In minutes, you can make a cool banner ad by using simple text objects. You can even animate the letters in your text by splitting it first into individual objects. Then, you can do anything you want with them; for instance, you can make them come out one at a time as if somebody is typing in the words.

Let's say we are to create a banner ad that gives people unique personal e-mail addresses. First, we show them a sample e-mail address, then we invite them to apply for one. Here's a perfect example:

1. First, we create a new project by selecting File>New. Set the canvas size to 480x60 pixels, the standard size for horizontal banners. Select solid color background object (the default color is white - click the color square to select another background color). Then click OK.

2. Now let's draw a thin border around the banner.

Right-click on the workspace and select Selection - All to select the entire working area. Then, using the Selection Tool - Rectangle from the Tool Panel, hold the Alt key down while clicking and dragging your mouse just barely inside the existing selection area, about a pixel off the original selection. Fill the border with a color (I used sage green) using the Fill Tool .

TIP: Pressing the Alt key down as you drag your mouse subtracts from the current selection area. Pressing the Shift key down, on the other hand, adds to the selection.

Using Text Tool and Split Text

3. Next we type in our text. But first, we want to leave the first frame empty and start our text from the second frame. To do this, select Frame>Duplicate Frame (or click Duplicate Frame on the Frame Panel).

4. While in Frame 2, select the Text Tool and click in the workspace where you want to place your text.

5. Enter and format your text in the Text Entry Box. I used a 28-point Courier New font, chose a gradient color, and set the character spacing to "5". Then I selected Anti-aliasing to smooth rough edges. I also added Shadow from the Attribute Toolbar.

Using Text Tool and Split Text

6. Click your text in the workspace, then select Object>Text - Split Text. This breaks the text into individual objects. You'll see a marquee (dotted lines) surrounding each text object.

7. Now let's insert some more frames using the Duplicate Frame button on the Frame Panel. There are 14 characters in all for the text we've just created; so we'll add 13 more frames.

8. On the Object Manager Panel, select all text objects except the one that contains the first letter "h" by clicking the thumbnails as you hold the Ctrl key down.

NOTE: Confirm selection by looking at the workspace. Everything except the letter "h" should be selected by now and should have a marquee around each character.

9. With the objects selected, click the Eye icon to hide them in the workspace. Do not click anywhere in the workspace just yet to avoid making the selections again.

10. Let's move on to the next frame, Frame 3. Going back to our Object Manager Panel, look for the next letter ("a") and, while holding the Ctrl key down, click the Eye icon on any of the selected objects. All the characters except for the first two ("ha") disappear.

11. Repeat the process for the remaining frames until all characters have become visible in the workspace.

Using Text Tool and Split Text

12. Next, let's add a second set of text in the banner ad. Select Frame>Add Frame. Select the Text Tool, click in the workspace and type the following text:

Font type and style: 25-point News Gothic, boldface
Character spacing: 5 With Anti-aliasing

13. On the Attribute Toolbar, click the Style button for more creative options. Add a Shadow to the text. Also apply the Neon effect: choose Outside for the Direction, set the Width to "5", and click the color square to pick a color (I chose white for a bright effect).

14. Now let's create a fading effect for this text. Duplicate 5 frames. Then in each of these frames, select the text in the Object Manager Panel and increase the Transparency setting by "20". But for the last frame, set Transparency to "99".

TIP: You can achieve the same fading effect by tweening the text object's transparency or by creating a fading banner text. See the tutorials, Tweening and Creating a banner advertisement (Using Banner Text) to see how such effects are done and try them out with your text.

15. Create a third set of text for the concluding scene. Add a new frame, select the Text Tool, then click anywhere in the workspace and type the following:

Ulead GIF Animator - Seamless Animation Using Tweening

At times, an animation can look awkward, especially when it seems to "jump" abruptly from one scene to the next. Ulead's GIF Animator 5 features Tweening, which smoothens the transition between frames to create a smooth flow of motion in your animation. You need only to specify the start and end positions of objects between two frames; the Tween function will take care of adding frames in between to animate the movement sequence.

Below is a simple exercise on using the Tween function. Try to animate the two objects (snail and red dot) as shown in the sample animation below.

BEFORE YOU START:
Download the file tween_project.uga, which contains the objects you will be using in the tutorial.

First, set the start and end positions of the objects.

1. Open the file tween_project.uga.

2. Select the big red dot (Obj. 1) on the Object Manager Panel and click Hide . This hides the object.

3. On the Frame Panel at the bottom, double-click Frame 1. Set the delay time to 20. Then in the Frame title, rename it "Initial Position."

4.
Click Duplicate Frame to add a second frame, with the same objects displayed as those in the first frame. Now double-click Frame 2. Set the delay time to 20 and rename it "Second position."

5. In the "Second position" frame, move the snail and the red dot from their initial position to the next.

Frame 1: Initial position Frame 2: Second position

In Frame 1, the snail and the red dot are in their initial position. In Frame 2, we move the snail and the red dot to the left.

To accurately position each object, select the object, right-click, and select Object Properties. Then, click the Position and Size tab and specify the Left position. (In this exercise, enter a value of "61" for the Left position of the snail and "5" for the red dot.)

6. Now, duplicate a frame based on Frame 2 (Second position). Drag the snail and the red dot to their next position, which is upward for the snail and downward for the red dot. Again, double-click the new frame, set the delay time to 20 and rename it "Third position."

Frame 3: Third position
Snail: 58, 55
Red dot: 4, 80

7. Repeat step 6 until you have established 6 frames, using the following coordinates to determine the snail and dot's position for each frame:

Frame 4: Snail: 56, 11, Red dot: 84, 79
Frame 5 : Snail: 33, 10, Red dot: 85, 19
Frame 6: Snail: 33, 10, Red dot: 44, 20 (the red dot and the snail are in one place)

Rename each frame using their corresponding position (example: Fourth Position, Fifth Position, etc.)

NOTE: You may also specify a transparency setting for each object. This makes your objects gradually fade while in motion after the Tween function is applied.

We now have a set of frames with our objects in various positions. If you preview this animation, you will notice that the sequence looks jumpy.

Now apply the Tween function to have a smoother transition between these frames.

8. On the Frame Panel, click Frame 1 (First position). Select the snail and the red dot in the workspace, then click Tween .

9. In the dialog box that opens, select the starting and ending frame (in this case, Frame 1 and Frame 2, or First and Second position) on the Frame tab. Also type in the number of frames (for this exercise, enter a value of "3") that you want GIF Animator to insert between Frame 1 and 2. (This will generate a smooth movement sequence of the snail and the red dot from Frame 1 to Frame 2 by automatically inserting a few frames in-between to animate these objects.) Enter "10" in Frame Delay to provide a small delay between frames.

10. On the Objects tab, select Currently selected objects. Also select Position. Then click Start Preview to see how the tweened objects look.

11. On the Frame Panel, you now have 4 frames before the Second position frame. This will be your first set of tweened sequence.

12. Repeat the Tweening process for the following frames:

Between Second Position and Third Position
Between Third Position and Fourth Position
Between Fourth Position and Fifth Position

At the end of this step, you should have a total of 18 frames, with three "tween" frames in between all frames named with Position.

13. For the finale, hit the snail. Duplicate the last frame, hide the small red dot and display the big red dot. Then move the big red dot on top of the snail. Also, double-click this frame and set Delay to "50".

Frame 18

Click the Preview tab to view the whole animation. Your animation should look like this:

Corel - Positioning objects as you draw

Here's a time saving trick! Did you know that you can position an object with any object-creation tool (any tool found in Rectangle, Ellipse, Object, or Perfect Shapes flyout) without having to go to the Toolbox? This tip is particularly useful if your drawing contains several objects.

By right-clicking an object with any object-creation tool, you can move or copy it to a new location in your drawing.

  1. With any object-creation tool active, right-click the object, and drag.
A blue outline of the object follows the pointer as you drag.

  2. After you positioned the object, release the right mouse button.
    A menu appears.

  3. Choose one of the following:
    • Move here
    • Copy here
The object is moved or copied.

Cropping graphics in CorelDRAW® X3

Whether you are working with a drawing or an imported bitmap, the new Crop tool lets you remove portions of your graphic quickly and easily. You no longer need to ungroup objects, break linked groups apart, or convert objects to curves to remove unwanted areas in a graphic.

The Crop tool is located in the toolbox, on the Crop tool flyout.

To crop objects, you define a rectangular area (cropping area) that you want to keep. Portions of the graphic outside the cropping area will be removed. You can specify the exact position and size of the cropping area, and you can rotate and resize it.

Cropping an imported bitmap

To crop a graphic

  1. Open the Crop tool flyout , and click the Crop tool .
Important note: If an object or bitmap is selected, only the selected item will be cropped. If no objects are selected, the entire graphic will be cropped.

  2. Drag to define a cropping area.

The cropping area indicates which portions of the graphic you want to keep.

  3. If you need to adjust the cropping area, perform any of the following tasks:

    • To move the cropping area, click inside the cropping area and drag it to a new position. If you want to specify the exact position of the cropping area, type values in the Position boxes on the property bar.

    • To resize the cropping area, drag any of its handles. If you want to specify the exact size of the cropping area, type values in the Size boxes on the property bar.

    • To rotate the cropping area, click inside, and drag a rotation handle. You can also type values in the Angle of rotation box on the property bar.

    Rotating the cropping area

  4. Double-click inside the cropping area.
Cropped objects, including text objects, are automatically converted to curves.

Working with layers in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4

Now you can work with layers on individual pages in CorelDRAW X4, as well as Master layers and Guide layers. If certain pages (such as the cover page) have their own specific content, it often makes sense to use separate layers for this.

In the picture above you can see two pages with their own layers. You can also see the Master Page layer.

Everything you put on the Desktop part of the Master Page will be shown on all pages. Using the Guides and Grids of the Master Page will reveal guides and grids on all pages.

You can also use guides and layers on individual pages, so these will only apply to the page you have selected. In this example, each page contains layers with text in different languages as well as a "background" and "pictures" layer.

To create a new layer, click the New layer button at the bottom of the Object Manager Docker.

As soon as you have clicked this button, you can rename the layer.

To the left of the layer name you can lock the layer (click on the pencil icon), hide the layer (click on the eye icon) and make it printable or non-printable (click on the printer icon).

By making a layer non-printable, you can create a layer for comments to other people involved in the process of creating the document. The layers will be visible but not printable.

Corel - Working with RAW files & snapshots

Corel PHOTO-PAINT X4 Image Adjustment Lab:
Working with RAW files & snapshots

When you edit photos in Corel PHOTO-PAINT X4, you have the option to import your images as RAW files. These files are like digital negatives with many more editing options than other image formats.

You can save your picture as a RAW-file, or import it directly from the camera into Corel PHOTO-PAINT.

You will then get a dialog box as shown below.

The dialog box looks much like the Image Adjustment Lab in Corel PHOTO-PAINT, but you have the White Balance option that works much like resetting your camera before you shot the picture.

You can adjust the image even further by clicking the Detail Tab, and in the Properties area, you can find details about the camera settings etc.

But when you do not have access to the RAW-format you can edit the image in this way:

  1. Open the image in Corel PHOTO-PAINT, and select the Adjust menu | Image Adjustment Lab, and you will see the same window as mentioned before.

In both cases, there is an excellent feature: The Create Snapshot feature

  1. Click the Create Snapshot button in the bottom of either of the screens, and you have created a snapshot of the image as it is. This is shown by the small thumbnail picture below the image.
  2. Make some adjustments in the picture by dragging the different sliders to the left or to the right.
  3. Click the Create Snapshot button again, and you have made a new thumbnail showing the adjustments.
  4. Click the Reset to Original button, and make some other adjustments,
  5. Click the Create Snapshot button again, and you have made a new thumbnail showing the second adjustment.
  6. Click on the Snapshot thumbnails, and you can browse through the different adjustments to find the best adjustment.

Customizing the user interface in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4

For commands that you use frequently, it is practical to use a shortcut key to apply the command. But with all the available commands, it can be difficult to remember all the shortcut keys.

To make this easier, you can create customised buttons for your favourite commands. You can then move these buttons to a place where you can easily find and use them while working with CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4.

The command Convert to Curves is a good example.

Convert to Curves

When you have created a star and then want to reshape it to move some of the points further away from the centre, you need to convert the star to curves first.

In the drawing below, a polygon with 12 points is reshaped with the shape tool by dragging the nodes in the polygon. All the nodes move simultaneously.

But the result is supposed to be like in the drawing below.

You can only get this result by converting the star to curves.

You will find this command by selecting the Arrange-menu | Convert to curves
This command is frequently used in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4, and therefore deserves its own place in the program. You can use it to convert rectangles, ellipses, polygons, stars and text to editable objects.

Creating a customised button — example "convert to curves"

In the Tools menu, select Customization and you will see the Options dialog box. Click on Commands.

Scroll to the Arrange area in the Search field, and find the command Convert to Curves.

Click on the command, and drag the highlighted field to a place in the program where it will always be visible, e.g. to the right of the Standard Bar or below the tools in the Tool Box.

Now the command appears as a button.

In the picture above, you can see the Convert to Curves button, as well as the buttons Move to front of page, and Move to back of page. This way, you can customise the user interface of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 to streamline your workflow and save time when you frequently complete similar tasks.

If you need to remove a button, just right-click on the button, select Customize | Toolbar Item | Delete.

Creating a flyer in CorelDRAW

Creating a flyer in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 using
the Table Tool and Live Text Preview

The most common way to create a layout is to use guidelines to help you align all the elements in the document. But when you need to change the layout, e.g. to add an extra row of pictures, you have to do the layout all over again.

You will save much time and effort by using the new table feature in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 to lay out your documents. That way, you can just add, remove or edit rows, columns or cells without having to start the layout all over again.

  • Start by making a sketch of the flyer, either on paper, or as here using the Smart Drawing Tool in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4.

With the sketch in place, it is easy to count the number of columns and rows you need for the layout.

  • You can create a table in two ways in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4:
  • Select the Table Tool in the Tool box, and drag with the tool on the page to create the table.
  • Or select the Table menu | Create new table. You can type the number of columns and rows, as well as the overall size of the table into the dialog box that opens.

  • Create a table with the settings as shown above

  • Select the Table Tool in the tool-box and change the size of the cells in the table by dragging the lines of the cells to fit the layout. You can drag the lines, when the cursor changes to a double arrow.
  • You can also merge the cells together. Select the cells by dragging across them with the mouse. Then right-click and select Merge Cells in the popup menu. Selected cells are shown with a hatch pattern.

Now you are ready to fill the cells with pictures and text:

Some of the cells are merged to fit pictures and text

  • You can write text in the different cells by selecting the Text Tool.
  • To import pictures you need to deselect the Table Tool first, e.g. by clicking on the Pick Tool. Import the first picture by selecting File | Import and finding the appropriate picture on your computer.
  • Insert the picture on the page, and drag it to the target cell while pressing the right mouse button.
  • Select Place inside Cell in the popup menu. You can move the picture into the right position, scale it etc.
  • Continue in the same way with the rest of the pictures.

Formatting the text using Live Text Preview

Another new feature in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 is the ability to preview changes to the text before you make them. This feature is called Live Text Preview.

  • Select the text with the Text Tool, and then scroll the Font List drop-down menu to find the most appropriate font. You will be able to instantly preview the change in the text you selected. In the image below we are previewing the font Impact.

Finally we need to remove the lines in the table.

  • Select the table with the Pick Tool
  • Set the border to All in the Property Bar, and then select none in the Border Width field

Create a Black and White Photo & Add a Photo Edge

Once the photo opens, click the B & W button on the toolbar to give the photo a vintage appearance.

To give the photo more interest, let’s add a Photo Edge. Click the Edge button on the toolbar. In the Photo Edge dialog, use the scroll bar on the right to view the photo edges. Click a photo edge to preview the photo with the photo edge effect. We have chosen the Antique Vignette edge, and selected the Over the Image option so the Edge is added on top of the photo. You can use any edge you like.

The Over the image option places the photo edge on top of the photo, covering the edges of the photo. This option is recommended for oval shaped frames.

The Around the image option places the photo edge around the edges of the photo, retaining all of the original photo. This option is recommended for rectangular edges. Click OK to apply the Edge. When you find the edge you like, click OK.

Now we’ll add a Frame. Click the Frame button on the toolbar to open the Add Picture Frame dialog. We’ve chosen Gold 01 and placed it Around the Image, but you can choose any frame you like. When you find the frame you want to use, click OK to apply the frame.

To save your new keepsake, click the Save As button and enter a new name. Click OK to save it.

In just a few clicks, you created your own photo keepsake! Now you can print it, or share it with others by creating and sending an E-Card.

Paint Shop Pro Photo - Remove Photo Backgrounds

Remove Photo Backgrounds with the Background Eraser

The Background Eraser lets you easily remove unwanted backgrounds while retaining the fine detail in your photos. It's great for when you want to cut something out of a photo and pop it into a new one! With this tutorial we'll show you how easy it is to use the Background Eraser.

What you'll need

When you complete this tutorial, you'll be able to

  • Use the Organizer to open a photo

Open the photo

  1. Download the PSPXI_08.jpg and PSPXI_09.jpg images, and save them in your My Pictures folder.
  2. Once you have the images saved, type PSPXI in the search box at the top of the Organizer. Your collection of image files is automatically filtered, so that only the images that start with PSPXI appear.

  3. Double-click each of the sample images to open them in the workspace. Before we start, click PSPXI_08, to make it the active image.

Remove the Background

  1. On the Learning Center palette, click Collage, and then click Remove Backgrounds. The Background Eraser is now the active tool.

  2. On the Tool Options palette near the top of your screen use these settings:
    • Size: 110
    • Limits: Discontiguous
All the rest of the default settings are fine.

  3. We're going to erase the background from the dragonfly photo. Place the cursor near the tip of the dragonfly's left wing. Make sure the edge of the cursor overlaps the dragonfly. Now hold down the mouse button and carefully drag around the dragonfly, removing the sky and the rope as you drag. When you've erased all the sky, release the mouse button. What you've erased will be transparent.
NOTE: Keep in mind that if you accidentally erase part of the dragonfly or an area you want to keep, just press Ctrl + Z to undo your most recent action. You can then continue using the Background Eraser.

Copy the Dragonfly Photo & Paste into a New Photo

  1. Now comes the fun part! With the dragonfly photo the active image, choose Edit > Copy (or press Ctrl + C). This will copy your entire photo to the clipboard.

  2. Now we need to make sure the flower image is our active photo. Just click it once to make it the active image. Then choose Edit > Paste As New Layer (or press Ctrl + L).

  3. The dragonfly photo will appear on top of your flower. You can use the Pick Tool to move the dragonfly around. That's all there is to it! Save and you're done.

Next Steps

See how easy that was? With your new background erasing power, you can have a lot of fun dropping pictures of you and your friends into all kinds of photos. Give a try and see what kind of trouble you can stir up.

Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo - Reverse Text on a Path

We see it everywhere, curvy, curly, circular text, but did you know you can do create that look in Paint Shop Pro? You can! With this tutorial we'll show you how to create reverse text on a path.

What you'll need

  • Corel® Paint Shop Pro® Photo XI

When you complete this tutorial, you'll be able to

  • Create a new image
  • Use the Preset Shapes Tool
  • Use the Text Tool
  • Work with the Layers Palette

Create a New Image

  1. Choose File > New. You can choose any size image you like, or any background color. For this example we used these settings:

    • Width: 800
    • Height: 600
    • Background Color: White

Once you've filled in the settings you want, click OK.

Create a Circle

  1. From the Tools Toolbar on the left, click the arrow next to the Preset Shapes Tool and choose Ellipse Tool.

  2. On the Tool Options Palette at the top of the screen, click the Circle under Mode. On the Materials Palette, choose Black for your Foreground color, and turn off the Background color.

  3. Now click on your image, and drag until you get a good-sized circle. It doesn't matter how big or small. Once you're done drawing your circle. Choose Objects > Convert to Path from the menu at the top of the screen.

  4. Now select the Pen Tool from the Tools Toolbar and right-click on the vector circle. From the context menu that opens choose Edit > Reverse Path.

Add Text

  1. From the Tools Toolbar select the Text Tool. On the Tool Options Palette you can select your Font and Font size.

  2. Also on the Tool Options Palette, we're going to set the Offset. You might need to click the arrow to the right of the Line Style to display the Offset settings. The Offset controls how close your text is to the line. If you want your text inside the circle you'll use a positive number. If you want it outside the circle choose a negative number. When you're complete a project or scrapbook layout, you can set this number to suit your design. For this example we set the Offset to 10.

  3. Now on the Materials Palette, you can set the color of your text. Click the Background swatch and choose the color you like. For this example we turned off the Foreground color and chose purple for the background color.

  4. Now you need to position the cursor over the line of your circle until your it turns into a sideways A with a curved line under it. Position your cursor approximately where you want the text centered on your path. When you're ready, click the circle's line and the Text Entry box will open. Enter your text and click Apply.

Hide the Circle

  1. If you like, you can get rid of the path that you placed your text on. On the Layers Palette, click the [+] next to the Vector 1 layer, and then click the layer visibility toggle (the eye) next to the New Ellipse. There you go! Reverse text on a path!

Next steps

Now that you've learned how to create this great text effect, you can use it in your greeting cards, scrapbook layouts, and just about anywhere your imagination takes you.

Use Corel MediaOne to create scrapbook pages, greeting cards and more!

MediaOne comes with hundreds of project templates that let you easily create album pages, scrapbook pages, greeting cards, multi-photo collages and more just by dropping your photos into the professionally-designed template of your choice! With this tutorial we'll show how easy it is.

What you'll need

  • Corel MediaOne Starter, MediaOne Standard, or MediaOne Plus (template availability will depend on your version)
  • Digital photos you'd like to use in a scrapbook page

When you complete this tutorial, you'll be able to

  • Use photo trays
  • Choose a MediaOne Project
  • Drop photos into a template
  • Add extra pages to your project

Add Photos to the Photo Tray

  1. Before you start creating your scrapbook page (or any of the creative projects), you need to add photos to the photo tray at the bottom of your MediaOne screen. The photo tray lets you work with just a few of your photos rather than having to dig through your entire collection to find what you're looking for. Just browse through the thumbnails under the Organizer tab to find the photos you want to include. To add a photo to the photo tray, click the thumbnail, and drag it into the photo tray.

Note: To add more than one photo at a time to the photo tray, hold down Ctrl while clicking the photos you want to use, and then drag them into the photo tray.

Choose a MediaOne Project

  1. Once you have all the photos you'll need for your scrapbook page, click the Create button in the Task panel on the left side of the MediaOne screen.
  1. Next, in the Choose a Project area select the project you'd like to complete. While we're using Artful Memory Scrapbooks by Sandra Magsamen, you can complete any project you like. The steps are so similar for each of the projects that once you learn how to do one, you can complete them all.
  1. In the Create area on the Task panel, click Select Layout to choose a layout for your scrapbook page. On the Select Layout palette that pops up, choose the layout that best suits your photos. For our example we're using Artful Scrapbooks 10.

Add a Photo to Your Scrapbook Page

    1. Now all you need to do is drag the photo from your Photo Tray at the bottom of the screen onto the scrapbook page where it says Drag Photo Here. It's really that easy!
    1. Don't worry if your photo pops in and doesn't look exactly how you want it to. Because as soon as you dropped your photo into your template, the Select a Layout palette changed to the Position Photos palette.
    1. You can use these tools to adjust your photo so it fits in your template just the way you want it to. For this example we used the Zoom Tool to zoom in on our subject and then the Pan Tool to drag the photo into position. To use the tools, just click the button in the menu, the Fit/Fill Frame and Rotate tools will happen automatically. With Zoom you need to click the photo to zoom in, and to use the Pan tool just click and drag your photo into position.

Add Text to Your Scrapbook Page

    1. If the project you chose has a text cell, you can add your own personalized text to your project. To add your text, click the text cell.
    1. As soon as you click the text cell, the Add/Edit Text palette opens. To add text to your project, just enter your message in the Text area of the palette. You can also choose your font, font size, font color, text formatting, and positioning. You can experiment with the different settings to get the look you want. The text appears on your project as soon as you start typing so you can see what it will look like right away.

Add Pages & Save Your Scrapbook Project

    1. Now you're done! If you like you can add new layouts and create a complete scrapbook in a matter of minutes. To add additional pages just click the Add Page button at the top of the MediaOne screen.
    1. You can change the layout of this new page just by clicking the Select a Layout button under Create in the task panel.

    2. To view all the pages in your project, just click the View Multipage button at the top of the screen.
    1. To save your scrapbook project, click the Save button at the top of the MediaOne screen. Give your scrapbook page a name. To share with friends and family via e-mail make sure to change the save as type to JPEG, and then click Save. To save your project to work on later, save it as a Corel Project file.

Corel MediaOne - E-mail Photos in a Snap

The best part of taking pictures is sharing them, and the most popular way to share digital photos is by e-mail. With Corel® MediaOne™, you get new ways to send your pictures. You can share them as a slide show, include them within the body of an e-mail, or send them as an e-mail attachment. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to amaze people with your fun photos.

What you'll need

  • Corel® MediaOne™ Starter, MediaOne Standard or MediaOne Plus
  • Digital photos you'd like to share

When you complete this tutorial, you'll be able to

  • Send a slide show of your photos
  • Embed photos in the body of an e-mail
  • Attach photos to an e-mail

Note: This tutorial shows you all the options for e-mailing digital pictures. If you're using a Web based e-mail program like Hotmail® or Yahoo!® Mail, go directly to step 15.

Select Photos to E-mail

  1. When you open Corel MediaOne, your photos are displayed under the Organizer tab. To email a single photo, just click the photo's thumbnail to select it. To e-mail multiple photos, hold down Ctrl and click the thumbnail for each photo that you want to e-mail.

  2. Once you've selected the photos, click Share Photos as E-mail in the Home area of the task panel.

E-mail Photos as a Slide Show

  1. At the top of the E-mail dialog box, select Corel Show.

  2. Under Corel Show Name, you can name your show. We called ours "Summer Weekend." Click OK.

  3. Once you click OK, your e-mail program opens a new e-mail message with your slide show attached. In the body of the e-mail are three slides showing your pictures. Now, just address the e-mail, type your message in the body of the e-mail, and send it. That's all there is to it!

Embed Photos in the Body of an E-mail

  1. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 above, but this time, in the E-mail dialog box select Embedded Photos, this means your photos will show up right in the body of your e-mail.

  2. Click the Maximum Photo Size drop-list to choose the size of your embedded photos. A smaller photo size means that you can attach more pictures and still send an e-mail that is relatively easy to download and open. The larger the photos you send, the larger the e-mail will be. Keep in mind the type of Internet connection used by your e-mail recipients. People using dial-up modems will need to wait a long time to download a large e-mail.

  3. Once you've selected your size click OK.

  4. Your photos appear in the body of a new e-mail. You'll have plenty of room at the top of the e-mail to type your message. If you like, you can add words between each picture. Just click near the lower-right corner of the photo, and press Enter. Now you have some room to say what you like. When you're done, address your e-mail and send it!

Send Photos as an E-mail Attachment

  1. Repeat Steps 1 and 2. This time, when the E-mail dialog box opens, select Attachments (original file format).

  2. Select the maximum file size (like in Step 9). When you're ready, click OK.

  3. Again, a new e-mail opens with your selected photos attached. Just address your e-mail, write your message in the body of the e-mail, and send it.

E-mail a MediaOne Show using a Web-based E-mail Account

  1. Follow Step 1 above to select the photos you'd like to share, and then click the Quick Review button at the top of the MediaOne screen.

  2. When the Quick Review starts, click Pause.

  3. Click the Save as Corel Show button (it's the second to last button in the bottom toolbar).

  4. Give your show a name, and then click Save. Once your show is saved click the X in the right corner of the screen to exit Quick Review. Now you can open a new e-mail from your Web-based e-mail service and attach the slide show.

  5. Place the cursor directly over the blemish between the man's eyebrows so that the blemish is enclosed by the inner circle of the cursor, and then click. Next, pan down toward the bottom of the picture, and zap the blemishes on his chin.

Whiten Teeth

  1. Now, let's whiten the woman's teeth. On the Makeover palette click the Toothbrush button.

  2. Zoom in on the woman's teeth. Place the cursor over a tooth, and then click once. You don't actually have to brush - the woman's entire smile is whitened in one click! For a brighter smile, you can adjust the Strength control on the Makeover palette.

Paint on a Tan

  1. Now on the Makeover palette, click the Suntan button. For this adjustment, you need to zoom out so that you can see the woman's whole face.

  2. Position the cursor, and paint a tan on the woman's skin. You can adjust the cursor size by increasing the Size setting. Note: If you paint an area unintentionally, you can undo the result by clicking the undo button at the top of the MediaOne workspace.

Add Photos to a Photo Tray

Just browse through the thumbnails under the Organizer tab to find the photos you want to include. To add a photo to the photo tray, click the thumbnail, and drag it into the photo tray.

Note: To add more than one photo at a time to the photo tray, hold down Ctrl while clicking the photos you want to use, and then drag them into the photo tray.

Arrange Photos in the Storyboard

  1. Once your photos are in the Photo Try, click Show on the left side of your screen.

  2. Next, we need to drag all of the photos from the photo tray into the Storyboard. Click the first thumbnail in the photo tray, hold down Shift, and click the last thumbnail in the photo tray. 3. Once your photos are in the Storyboard, you can adjust the order they will play. The slide show will present the photos as they appear left to right in the Storyboard. Just click a thumbnail in the Storyboard, and drag it to the desired position.

Add Cool Transitions

  1. There are two ways to add transitions to your slide show. You can apply the same transition to all of your slides, or you can add a specific transition to each slide individually. If you want to add the same transition to all of your slides, select one of the thumbnails in the Storyboard.

  2. In the Show area of the task panel, click Change Slide Settings. On the Change Slide Settings palette you can set the duration for each slide. We used the default of 6 seconds. You can also choose to include motion effects. For our show, we used automatic motion effects. To apply these settings to each slide in the show, click the Apply on all Slides button in upper right corner of each group box.

  3. In the Transition group box, click the drop-list arrow, and choose a transition. For this example, we used Random but you can choose any transition you want. If you are adding transitions or motion effects to slides individually, repeat Steps 5 and 6 for each slide in your show.

Corel MediaOne Video Basics

One of the great things of so many digital cameras is that you can take video clips! Adding motion to your memories is great, and with MediaOne Plus you can make the most of these video clips. With this tutorial we'll show you how easy it is to manage your videos and even turn a frame of your video into a still picture.

What you'll need

  • Corel® MediaOne™ Plus
  • A digital video clip

When you complete this tutorial, you'll be able to

  • Search your collection to find videos
  • Change thumbnail size
  • Set a specific frame of your video as a thumbnail
  • Extract a frame as a still picture

Find Your Videos & Enlarge Thumbnails

  1. We're going to quickly search our entire collection to find our video clips. In the upper-right corner of your MediaOne screen, type either .avi or .wmv (these are common video file formats) into the Search box. As soon as you start typing MediaOne will filter through your collection and pull up your video files.

  2. Once you find your video files, the thumbnails might be too small to really see what you have. Click the Zoom Slider next to the Search box. Dragging the slider to the right will shrink your thumbnails, and dragging it to the left will enlarge them. Drag the slider until the thumbnails are a size you like.

Play Video Clips in the Browser

  1. Click one of your video clip thumbnails once to select it. In the upper-left corner of the thumbnail, you should see a Play button. Click that button to play your clip in the browser.

Choose a New Thumbnail

  1. Sometimes the thumbnails for our video clips aren't quite as descriptive as we'd like. But with MediaOne you can choose any frame from your clip as the thumbnail. This way at a glance you can see exactly what the video is about. Click the Play button in the upper-left corner. When you see the frame you want to use as your thumbnail click Pause.

  2. Now just click the Set as Thumbnail button (it's right next to the Play/Pause button) and that frame will be set as your thumbnail.

Save a Frame as a Picture

  1. Here's one of the coolest features in MediaOne! You can choose a frame from your video and save it as a picture. This way you can use your favorite shots in your creative projects. Once again you're going to push the Play button and then Pause when you find the frame you want as a picture.

  2. Now click the Save Frame as Photo button (it's right next to the Set as Thumbnail button). Once you click the button, the Save as dialog box will open. Here you can choose where you want to save your photo and a name for your new photo. When you're ready, click Save. That's all there is to it!

With CorelDRAW X3, it's never been easier to attach text to a path with precision — a common effect used in creating signs and logos. The interactive Fit Text to Path tool lets users simply select text, move the pointer along a path, and click to set the text's position. Users can also easily control the text's offset distance from the path.

In addition, users can scale the text after it has been placed on a path by simply selecting both the text and the path and dragging one of the handles.

  1. Click the Freehand tool, and draw a curved line to use as a path.

  2. Click the Text tool, click anywhere in the drawing window, and type.

  3. Click Text > Fit Text To Path.
The pointer changes to the Fit Text to Path pointer. As you move the pointer along the path, a preview of where the text will be fitted is displayed.

  4. Move the pointer along the path, and click to fit the text.
With a closed path, the text is centered along the path. With an open path, the text flows from the point of insertion.

  5. On the property bar, adjust the value in the Distance From Path list box.

  6. On the property bar, adjust the value in the Horizontal Offset list box.

  7. In the Mirror Text area on the property bar, use the Mirror Horizontal or Mirror Vertical buttons to choose the text's orientation.

  5. Select the white key, then select the Blend tool and drag to the larger stroked key.

  1. Select the Interactive Drop Shadow tool and add a drop shadow to the blended keys.

  1. Create a box to represent the size of the business card you want and fill it with a radial, gradient fill. Select your key and PowerClip it to the box (Effects/PowerClip/Place Inside Container). You can also edit the positioning of the key by selecting Effects/PowerClip/Edit Contents/Finish Editing This Level.
