Get More Omnibox Suggestions in Google Chrome

As almost everybody knows by now, Google has released their Chrome web browser, a stripped down browser built for speed and an inline search bar known as the Omnibox. The only problem is that by default there are only 5 suggestions, but with a simple command line switch we can increase that number.

omnibox 10 Google Chrome Tips and Tricks

Google Chrome can be adjusted here.

  1. Locate the Google Chrome Shortcut from your Start Menu.
  2. Right-click and select Properties.
  3. Now append the command line parameter -omnibox-popup-count=12 at the end of the Target Path field.
  4. OK out of the popup and now the next time Chrome is launched from the shortcut your Omnibox will return a larger results set.

In Ubuntu, on the desktop, right click on the Application menu and select Edit Menus. Navigate to wine->Programs->Google Chrome on the left pane. Double click on Google Chrome on the right pane and edit the Command.

First Google Chrome Extension GreaseMetal

Since, Google Chrome does not provide any method to develop or support browser addons, Greasemetal has found the way around by using an inter-process communication channel called AutomationProxy, which is used for automatic testing of web browser functions.

google-chrome-extension 10 Google Chrome Tips and Tricks

GreaseMetal the free extension offers functionality similar to highly popular GreaseMonkey extension for Firefox and GreaseKit for Safari, the free extension lets you use existing GreaseMonkey scripts to modify webpages being displayed, this also means Google Chrome will now be able to block advertisements using ad-blocking scripts.

To install Greasemonkey script on Google Chrome, go to user script and search for the Greasemonkey script you want. Visit the installation script page which says “install the script” and click on the Monkey bookmarklet, this will change the script into Chrome compatible bookmarklet. Now drag “Install the script” onto the bookmark bar of chrome.

Firefox Extension: Open In Google Chrome Version 1.0

If you are using Firefox as a default browser and you still want to open some web site in Google Chrome, this Firefox extension might be useful. Open in Google Chrome Firefox extension will open any websites in Google Chrome from Firefox in one click. Once you install this extension into Firefox, you can easily open up your current page in Chrome. As an extra bonus feature, you can configure it so that certain pages like Gmail always open in Chrome. It can also be configured to always open certain web pages in Chrome - e.g. *google*, gmail, etc.

Install “Open in Google Chrome” for Firefox 3
Download open-in-google-chrome.xpi on to your desktop and then drag it inside Firefox 3 much like what you did for Send to Google Docs..

  • Restart Firefox. Then go to Tools -> Add-ons -> Options and browse for the chrome.exe file on your Vista / XP / Windows 2000 machine.

firefoxgooglechrome-jadi-1 10 Google Chrome Tips and Tricks

  • In Windows XP, Google Chrome installs under \Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\ while in Windows Vista, Google Chrome installs in \Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\
  • The Google Chrome Firefox extension can also be configured to open a group of website(s) directly in Chrome even if you try accessing them from Firefox. For instance, you may add “yahoo” to the list and any site that has yahoo in the URL would open in Chrome automatically. That includes “maps.yahoo.com”, “news.yahoo.com”, “yahoo.com” and even “bbc.com/news/yahoo-shares.html” so be careful while picking these wildcards.

How to use separate profiles in Chrome

If you have started to love Google Chrome and have made it the default browser on your computer, here’s a useful tip regarding your privacy. The tip is more relevant for people who have computers in the living room and that same machine is shared among all other family members. If more than one person on your system is switching to Chrome, and you don’t feel like staying in Incognito Mode all the time, creating a new profile in Chrome requires manually creating a folder in Chrome’s application data folder, but that’s all there is to it.

chromeaddressbar-jadi1 10 Google Chrome Tips and Tricks

Here you have a tutorial on how to create separate profiles for Google Chrome.

  • Open Chrome installation folder at:
    C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome (for Windows Vista)
    C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome (for Windows XP)
  • Go to User Data folder available inside Chrome installation folder.
  • Create a copy of the “default” folder in the “User Data” folder itself. Give that copy a name.
  • To run Google Chrome using this profile instead of the default profile, create a shortcut on your desktop by right-clicking on desktop, choose New -> Shortcut and enter location:
    C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe –user-data-dir=”..\User Data\Your_Name” (for Windows Vista)
    C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe –user-data-dir=”..\User Data\Your_Name” (for Windows XP)

To prevent yourself from getting into this ‘not so comfortable’ situation, what you can do is create a separate user profile in Google Chrome. Thus all your browser history, bookmarks, cookies, search terms, etc. are not shared with anyone else in the family.

Tips and Tricks - Install flash player in Google Chrome

Since the first beta release of the hot Google Chrome, some users have doubted the compatibility of Adobe Flash Player in Chrome, as some YouTube video clips cannot be properly played in Chrome. The issue is so strange, as the same Webkit engine browser Apple Safari has no such problem. However, Flash needs to be upgraded, and I get a nasty little message telling me I need the latest player.

sample-edu-quiz-jadi1 10 Google Chrome Tips and Tricks

Here’s how you get round that. Cue evil laugh.
1. Download this xpi file.
2. Then rename it to .zip. It’s a special archive file of only the plug-in bit of the flash player app from adobe that interacts with your browser.
3. Extract it with Winzip to a place you’ll remember. (I did it to My docs but it can go anywhere.)
4. Grab the flashplayer.xpt and NPSWF32.dll files. Copy them (Right click, copy)
5. Head to C/Documents and settings/”YOUR USER NAME”/Local Settings/Application Data/Google/Chrome/Application/Plugins/ and copy your files in there.
6. Close and restart Chrome
7. Go to Youtube and try it out.
8. I also put the files in this location to cover my bases but I think its unnecessary:

C/Documents and settings/”YOUR USER NAME”/Local Settings/Application Data/Google/Chrome/Application/”File with a load of numbers instead of a title”/Resources/
You’re welcome Internet. After all you’ve done for me

Tips and Tricks - Automatic Theme Switcher Skins Google Chrome

Google Chrome is awesome and much liked by users because of its fast and minimalist browsing experience. On the other hand its default blue color theme has disappointed some of users, but, there is no more disappointment as there is a new app Google Chrome Automatic Theme Switcher. This little application changes the skin of your Google Chrome browser. The application bundles up three ready to use skins — skins, that the author of this application found on the net, so you can make yours.

chromethemeswitcher1 10 Google Chrome Tips and Tricks

The Automatic Theme Switcher is is a free download for Windows only. Install the beta theme switcher on your PC running Chrome to choose one of three skins for Chrome—black, blue (the default), or green—and activate it immediately, without having to manually muck around in Chrome’s installation folders. Alternately, you can manually download Google Chrome themes here (the orange one isn’t available in the Theme Switcher utility just yet)

iTunes - iTunes Store

iTunes Shopping Cart

iTunes Shopping Cart

As a preference in iTunes, you can choose to save items you want to buy to a shopping cart until you’re ready to confirm your purchase and download all your music at once. This is a convenient feature if you have a slow Internet connection at one location with your laptop, if you’re trying to restrain your impulse shopping tendencies, or if you want to approve your children’s selections before purchasing them.

iTunes Shopping Cart

To turn on your iTunes Shopping Cart, go to iTunes > Preferences (Windows — Edit > Preferences). In Preferences, click the green Store icon and choose "Buy using a Shopping Cart."

iTunes 1-Click

By default, music is purchased using 1-Click, which means the music you buy is immediately charged to the credit card listed on your Apple account and downloaded into your iTunes library. If you turn on "Buy using a Shopping Cart" and want to return to using 1-Click instead, open iTunes > Preferences (Windows — Edit > Preferences). Click the Store button at the top of the window and make sure "Buy and download using 1-Click" is selected. Then click OK.

iTunes Store Downloads

If you've downloaded something from the iTunes Store but don't see it in your Purchased playlist or elsewhere in your iTunes library, make sure your Internet connection is active and choose "Check for Purchases" from the Store menu in iTunes to resume your download.

iTunes Store Previews

To listen to a preview of a song in the iTunes Store, double-click the song. If your network connection is slower than 128 Kbps, the preview may sound jittery. Choose iTunes > Preferences (Windows — Edit > Preferences), and in the Store pane select the "Load complete preview before playing" checkbox.

Make a Wish List

Wishlist

You can add previews of any song in the iTunes Store to a playlist and create a wish list of songs that you want to buy at a later date. First create a new playlist. Then drag the individual song preview from the iTunes Store to the new wish list playlist. Listen to the song preview or buy the song directly from your playlist by clicking the Buy button.

After you buy a song using the Buy button, the song remains in your wish list playlist, but double-clicking it plays the entire song instead of just the preview, and the price for the song no longer appears.

iTunes Store URLs

To include the URL to an iTunes Store page in an email or other program, drag a link, track, or graphic from a page in the iTunes Store to your email program or other application. You can also right-click the item and choose Copy iTunes Store URL.

Allowances, Gift Certificates & Gift Cards

Give your kids a way to download their favorite songs with music allowance accounts. They can access the iTunes Store without using a credit card. You set the limit on how much they can spend with an allowance that refreshes monthly. You can cancel the allowance or adjust the amount at any time.

An iTunes Store gift certificate makes gift giving easy, and you can email it for speedy delivery (great for last-minute gifts).

If you’re interested in creating an allowance account or purchasing an iTunes gift certificate, visit the iTunes Store and select Buy iTunes Gifts from the Quick Links menu on the right. You can also purchase iTunes Gift Cards from the Apple Store and many other retailers.

iTunes - Making CDs

Compilation Albums

To see all the songs on a compilation CD grouped together in your library, make sure "Group compilations when browsing" is selected in iTunes > Preferences (Windows — Edit > Preferences). In Mac OS X, you can open Preferences from the iTunes menu, or in Windows, choose Preferences from the Edit menu. If this checkbox is deselected, artists from compilation CDs appear individually in the Artist list in Browse view.

Print CD Inserts

You can print a list of the songs in your library or a selected playlist to use as a CD jewel case insert, or simply to have a song or album list. Select your library or a playlist and choose File > Print. Choose whether you want to print a CD jewel case insert or song or album list. Select a printing theme from the Theme pop-up menu. Themes allow you to change how the information is printed. When you're done, click Print.

iTunes - File Management

Converting WMA Files

In iTunes for Windows, you can convert your unprotected WMA files to AAC files (or whatever file format is chosen in the Importing pane of iTunes Preferences) without changing the original WMA file. Simply drag the WMA files into your library in iTunes and iTunes does the grunt work, converting them for you. Windows Media Player 9 or later must be installed to convert unprotected WMA files. Protected WMA files cannot be converted.

Playing Authorized Tracks

If you’re listening to the songs in a shared library or playlist and your computer is not authorized to play the purchased songs in the list, iTunes skips the purchased music. To listen to purchased music in a shared library or playlist, you need to double-click the song and authorize your computer to play it.

CD Track Info

If you insert a new CD in your computer and the song names appear in iTunes as “Track 1,” “Track 2,” “Track 3,” and so on, you’ll want to add the real album information before you import the CD. There are two ways to do so.

First, if you’re connected to the Internet you can go to Advanced in the menu bar and select Get CD Track Names. But perhaps your CD is rare and the album information is not in the database online. In that case, you can click the song name twice and then type the title manually. The same applies for the artist and album names.

CD Track Info

Adding Songs from CDs

To quickly add a song from a CD to an existing playlist, insert the CD, then drag the song from the list of CD tracks to the playlist. The song is imported into your library and added to the playlist. To add a song from a CD to a new playlist, drag the song from the CD to the white area below the items in the Source List. The song is imported into your library and added to a new playlist.

Editing CD Information

To quickly enter CD information for all the songs on a CD, select the CD in the Source List and choose File > Get Info. You can enter basic CD information once for all the songs on the CD.

CDs from Albums

To make your own CD from an album in your library, click Library and choose View > Show Browser (if you see only Hide Browser, then the Browser is already visible). Drag an album from the Album list in the top-right section of the library to the white area below the items in your Source List. Click the album's playlist icon to select it, then choose File > Burn Playlist to Disc.

To avoid the message that appears when you insert a blank CD, click the Burn button before inserting the blank CD.

iTunes - Playlists

Playlist Windows

To open a playlist in a new window, double-click the playlist icon in the Source List. To copy a song from one playlist to another, drag the song to a playlist in the Source List.

Playlists from Albums

To quickly create a playlist from selected songs, select the songs in your library and then choose File > New Playlist from Selection.

Smart Playlists

An easy way to keep track of your music by genre or artist is to create Smart Playlists. A Smart Playlist continuously searches your music library for new tracks meeting the criteria you set. iTunes gives you conditions to set as criteria for Smart Playlists, including Artist, Album, Year, Song Name, (Date) Last Played, Date Added, Genre, Composer, My Rating, Play Count, and more. For example, you may want to have all your R&B/Soul music in one playlist. If you set up a Smart Playlist, it will gather every R&B/Soul song in your library and continuously add to the playlist new R&B/Soul songs imported into your library in the future.

Share Your Playlists

You can share your musical tastes with other people by publishing your playlists on the iTunes Store. Shared playlists include 30-second previews of any songs in your playlist that are also available on the iTunes Store. If a song in your playlist is not available on the iTunes Store, the song isn’t listed in the shared playlist.

To share a playlist, select the one you want to share. Click the Publish arrow to the right of the playlist in the Source List. If you don’t see the Publish arrow, make sure the “Show links to the iTunes Store” checkbox is selected in iTunes > Preferences (Windows — Edit > Preferences).

Changes you make to your playlist after it’s published are not updated automatically on the iTunes Store. You need to click the Publish arrow each time you make a change that you want to share.

Share your Playlists

Party Shuffle

Party Shuffle

Let’s get the party started. And just as important — let’s keep it going. iTunes Party Shuffle takes over as DJ, so you can relax and enjoy your party. Open iTunes > Preferences (Windows — Edit > Preferences), click Show Party Shuffle, and then click OK. Select Party Shuffle from the Source List and iTunes creates a random playlist from music in your library. If you like you can change the source (at the bottom of Party Shuffle playlist) from Library to a select playlist.

Party Shuffle Options

More Party Shuffle options let you choose to see the last 5-100 songs played or none at all, as well as the next 5-100 songs that will play. Another nifty option lets you direct Party Shuffle to play higher-rated songs more often. Using these options, you can add, remove, and rearrange songs in the random playlist on the fly, leaving you with an awesome playlist and more time to party.

iTunes - Tips

Right-Click Shortcuts

You can right-click songs, playlists, column headings, and many other items in iTunes to do certain tasks more easily. For example, to see all the playlists that include a particular song, right-click the song, then scroll down to Show in Playlist.

Quick Links

To quickly find more music on the iTunes Store from an artist in your library or perhaps a cover of the same song by a different artist, click the arrow next to the artist or song title in your library.

To do so, open iTunes > Preferences (Windows — Edit > Preferences) and make sure you check "Show links to the iTunes Store."

Quick Link arrow

Scrubbing Tracks

To scan forward or back when a song is playing, drag the diamond in the progress bar.

To switch between total, elapsed, and remaining time, click the time display at the top of the iTunes window. (You might need to double-click a song to see the time display.) Click the song title to switch between artist, title, and album name.

Scrubbing Tracks

View Options

In iTunes you can customize your view of library and playlist columns however you like. What track information is most important to you — Song Name, Time, Album, Artist, Genre, My Rating, Last Played (date), Date Added, Year, Play Count? In View > View Options, you can show or hide columns in your jukebox. You can even move the columns around by clicking and dragging the column headings. It’s your jukebox. You can lay it out any way you choose.

Total Times

To switch between the approximate time and precise time for all the songs in the selected playlist or the library, click the time displayed at the bottom of the iTunes window.

Buffer Sizes

If you have a fast Internet connection (DSL or cable modem), you can have the music that’s streamed to your computer (previews, radio stations, shared music libraries) begin playing more quickly by choosing the Small streaming buffer size in the Advanced pane of iTunes > Preferences (Windows — Edit > Preferences). If you have a slower Internet connection (dial-up), you can choose the Large buffer size for smoother streaming playback.

How to creat a Torrent

Sharing in BitTorrent is a little more involved than with other P2P applications. This is the result of the protocol that makes this distribution system so efficient. BitTorrent shares content by breaking it up in small pieces and distributing them randomly between peers. Those peers then share these pieces with each other. This saves the seed the trouble of sending the same pieces over and over to different peers and enables all the peers in a swarm to participate to the distribution of the files regardless of their percentage of completion.

In order for all those peers to know how to put all the pieces back in the right order and use the content, BitTorrent clients requires a special reference file called a Torrent. The torrent is what you download from the site and load into BitTorrent. All the peers and seeds involved in the distribution of any given file have the matching torrent loaded into their client. In order to share your own content over the BitTorrent network you need to create a torrent for this content.

Things to consider before hand

By now, we'll assume that you have downloaded a few torrents and are familiar with torrent indexing sites (if not, refer to the Beginner's Guide). In order to share your content, other people must have access to your torrent. The most common way to do this it to upload to a torrent site.

  • Before you make a torrent, it would be wise to pick a site and review its policies and rules, which can be found in their FAQ section.
  • Your site of choice may have restrictions about content; some do not allow porn, some specialize in specific type of content (such as music, or anime).
  • Your site of choice may also have some specific requirements about content and demand that you add some extras to your torrent such as signature files and ads.
  • Some public sites require registration for uploading; all private sites do.
  • It is important to consider the size of your content for two reasons: first, not everyone has sufficient disk space for very large torrents; and second, larger torrents require longer seeding times. In such cases consider making multiple torrents based on some practical partition such as years, season, parts.
  • Before making your torrent, select your content's location carefully as it will have to remain there (during initial seeding at least).
  • The files in your content must not be modified after you have made the torrent, as this would cause corruption in the torrent.
  • Make sure the files are not in use while you make the torrent.
  • There is no need to compress multiple files into one archive. Many torrenters find it annoying. It also requires twice the space: once for the original and once for the archive.
  • You may wish to make a torrent for exclusive distribution among friends and family. In such case, you may choose to distribute your torrent in some other manner.

Create a new Torrent

You can make a new torrent easily using BitTorrent's built-in torrent maker:

BitTorrent menu > File > Create New torrent

This opens the "Create New Torrent" dialog box; all you need is to fill in the required information...

1. The Source

Here is where you specify the location of the content you wish to share. Before selecting the path chose whether you are sharing a single file or multiple ones. If you are making a torrent with more then one file those files must be located in a single folder, with nothing else in it.

  1. Select "Add a File" or "Add a directory."
  2. Browse your way to the location of file or directory you would like to share.

2. The Tracker

A tracker is an application or script on a system that relays connection information about peers on a given torrent. However, it is most important since without it BitTorrent clients would not know how to find other clients sharing the same files. BitTorrent knows which tracker to contact by reading the announce URL in the torrent. Trackers generally look like any other internet address (http//somewebaddress:portnumber/announce). If you need a tracker you may:

  • Check the site where you wish to upload the torrent.
  • Private sites usually provide their own tracker.
  • Public sites may also provide their own tracker, or include the URL of generic ones.
  • In a pinch, look at the properties of a torrent you have downloaded from the site you wish to use and copy the tracker from there (but in such a case wait to test the torrent out before uploading it to the site as even those tracker may require you to have registered the torrent with them first).

BitTorrent supports HTTP and HTTPS (SSL) trackers. UDP trackers are not supported. BitTorrent also supports torrents with multiple trackers; trackers from the same server (with similar URLs) must be grouped together and those from different servers separated by a blank line.

BitTorrent contains an "embedded tracker" intended for people wishing to share with a small group for a short period of time. This should not be used for sharing torrent over public or private sites, but only for private stuff and over short periods of time (along the lines of family movies shared with friends and such).

  • The embedded tracker URL is: http://your_ip_address:port/announce (where your ip is your computer's ip address and port is BitTorrent's listening port)
  • The embedded tracker must be enabled in: BitTorrent menu > options > preferences > Advanced > bt.enable_tracker: set to "true".

Warning: Using the embedded tracker requires you to have the same IP address and the same port as long as the torrent is active. This means if you use a dynamic IP and randomized port and get disconnected from the internet, your IP and port will get reset, and the torrent will die.

3. Comments

You may add a comment about the torrent (in BitTorrent these comments appear at the bottom of the general tab.)

4. Piece Size

When making a torrent, the content gets divided in small pieces for easier transfer and management. You may use this option to select the size of the pieces. As a rule, the larger the content the larger the pieces. Most people should leave this setting to auto-detect and allow BitTorrent to make the proper selection.

5. Others

  • "Start Seeding" will automatically load the newly made torrent into BitTorrent when you have completed the process. Some may wish to disable it if the site they are uploading to requires them to "re-download" the torrent for seeding (this occurs with some sites requiring passwords or cookies). If unchecked, you will need to load the torrent into BitTorrent manually for seeding.
  • "Private Torrent" will disable DHT (Distributed Hash Table) and PEX (Peer EXchange), which are alternate means of getting peers from other peers instead of the tracker. This is particularly useful when the tracker is unavailable for some reason. However some private sites do not allow it because it keeps them from monitoring users' share ratio properly and allows members to share torrents with unregistered users.

6. Create and Save As...

This is the final step in making a torrent. For all intents and purposes it works just like saving a file in any other application.

You should save the torrent in an appropriate location, such as where your other torrents are located or in the folder of the torrent you are making (this will not affect the content).

Naming conventions:
You can name your torrent anything you want, but remember that other people need to search for it and find it. The name should be significant, and representative of the content. Calling it "My first torrent" will not tell anything about the content, and few people will take a chance and download it. You may have seen this naming convention around before:

"My Vacation movies_1996_CAM_MPG_BYME.torrent" which would translate as:
"title_episode_quality_format_maker.torrent".

  • "Title" should be simple and descriptive if needed.
  • "Episodes" is a number used when dealing with sequential torrents. It can be a date, a release, or a label with season and episode (common formats include 102, 1x02, and s01e02, which all translate to season 1, episode 2).
  • "Quality" denotes the source or the type of file.
  • "Format" gives peers an indicator of what will be needed to use the content (xvid, doc, avi, mp3, iso, etc).
  • "Maker" shows the credits for the torrent and/or the content.

Remember, many operating systems limit file names to 256 characters so it's better to plan ahead.

Making your Torrent Available to Others

The most common way to do this is to upload it to a torrent site. If this was your intention you should have read up on the site's policies, rules and procedures of that site before uploading.

Uploading the .torrent

  1. Using your web browser, go to the site (log in if needed).
  2. Navigate your way to the upload page, and follow the instructions provided.
  3. Some sites allow you to add comments and descriptions. Try to put something you would find useful as a peer.

Do not panic if the torrent just sits there without uploading, it may take a while for other people to notice the torrent and start downloading it. It may take longer if the content is something obscure with limited appeal.

Private Trackers

Some private sites will require you to download your own torrent from their site so you can seed it.

  1. Download your torrent from the site and load it into BitTorrent (it should go to download mode and show 0%.)
  2. Stop the torrent, right-click on it, and select "Set Download Location" in the context menu under "Advanced".
  3. Browse your way to where the content is located (i.e. the same path you specified when making the torrent) and open. For torrents with multiple files, make sure you point TO the containing folder and not IN it.
  4. Start the torrent. BitTorrent will start checking the files (% will rise rather quickly), and when it reaches 100% it will start seeding (the larger the torrent the longer this will take).

Connection Guide

This is a walkthrough on how to setup BitTorrent for your particular internet connection. It is recommended that you follow these steps in order, since the guide assumes that previous settings have been enabled.

1. Testing your connection speed

Since you will always be uploading at your maximum speed, torrent clients need to be configured according to maximum upload speed in order to avoid choking your connection. So you will need to test your connection:

  1. Stop all internet traffic before proceeding with the test, including BitTorrent.
  2. Visit one of the following test sites:
DSL Reports hosts a listing of Java-based North-American testing engines you can use.
A Beltronica Telecom hosts a multi language testing engine which using ActiveX controls. Beltronica also provides many international testing locations.
testmy.net hosts another great testing service, with both download and upload-only speed tests.
  3. Perform the test several times. Select a good median result (neither the highest nor the lowest).
  4. The value needed to proceed with the configuration is the upload speed (or upstream, or up-speed) expressed in kilobits per second (kbits, or kbs, kb/s) not kilobytes (kB, kbytes, etc).

2. Setting BitTorrent for your speed

  1. Go to Options > Speed Guide
  2. Select the listing closest to your upload speed result (rounding down as necessary)
  3. Higher settings will not give you better speed, and may in fact make download speeds worse. Too low of an upload speed will give the same result. So don't try to be greedy.
  4. Click the "Use Selected Settings" button at the bottom of the Speed guide window.

3. Tweaking the upload speed

The Speed Guide is great for setting up a variety of variables but it does fall short if your test speed falls half way between two of the possible speeds listed.

  1. Take your upload speed result in kbit/s and divide it by 8 (you now have your result in kBytes.)
  2. Take your speed in kByte/s and multiply it by 0.7 (this now gives you a proper upload speed of 70% of you tested max)
  3. Go to Options > Preferences > Bandwidth and put your result in the "Maximum upload rate" box.

4. Enabling Protocol Encryption

Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) actively interfere with P2P activities in order to reduce their bandwidth requirements. This causes BitTorrent and other file sharing download speeds to become slow. To avoid this, BitTorrent and other clients have introduced an encryption protocol to prevent ISPs from identifying BitTorrent traffic.

  • Go to Options > Preferences > BitTorrent. Set Outgoing under Protocol Encryption to Enable, check "Allow incoming legacy connections".

Some ISPs have extremely aggressive throttling methods and for those users it might be necessary to set outgoing to Forced; however this will greatly reduce the number of peers you can connect to. Enabled is sufficient for most users.

5. Authorizing BitTorrent in your firewall

People using the Microsoft Windows XP/Vista firewall:

  • Go to Options > Preferences > Connection, check "Add BitTorrent to Windows Firewall." This is enabled by default.

People using other firewalls:
You will need to refer to your software's own documentation.

Trying it out

BitTorrent should now be set properly for your connection. You can test your speed with any torrent of your choice. Here are a couple of torrents that are particularly good for testing your connection:

  • Slackware 10.2 torrent, one of the many Linux distributions, is great to test since it is hosted on dedicated servers. It will max out your internet connection within a few minutes (10-15 on average).
  • Open Office is a free, open-source, multi-platform, multi-language office suite. Like Slackware, it will max your connection very quickly, not to mention being a useful application to have around.

You don't need to download the entire torrent. You can leave it running just long enough to reach your maximum download speed.

If you are behind a router, then you will also need to follow the instructions on the rest of the page.

Resolving a NAT problem

At the bottom of the BitTorrent window toward the middle of the status bar you will see a colored dot. If the colored dot is red you either have a NAT problem, or have not yet configured your firewall to allow BitTorrent.

A yellow icon is an indeterminate state. To know if your setup is correct, open the Speed Guide with Ctrl+G, then click "Test if the port is forwarded properly." If the test is not successful, then either your forwarding is not working correctly or your firewall is not configured properly.

Some people who do not have a separate router may find that their modem serves as both and this procedure will also apply.

1. Using UPnP or NAT-PMP

Newer router models often have the UPnP (Universal Plug 'n Play) or NAT-PMP built in. This allows for automatic forwarding of ports, making the rest of the instructions on this page unnecessary. Check your router's documentation for instructions on how to enable it, and then enable UPnP in BitTorrent:

  • Go to Options > Preferences > Connections, check "Enable UPnP port mapping" and check "Enable NAT-PMP port mapping."

2. Manually forwarding a port

If UPnP/NAT-PMP is not available or does not work, it will be necessary to forward the port manually. A forwarded port is needed for any P2P client you use, not just BitTorrent. Since we want to forward a single port, we need to set the listen port for BitTorrent:

  1. To set a single port, navigate to Options > Preferences > Connections
  2. Click "random port" once, and note the port number provided. This will be the port number you will be forwarding in your router. (You may also assign a port number of your choice)
  3. Uncheck "Randomize port each time BitTorrent starts." The port number will no longer change each time BitTorrent is started.

3. Setting up a static IP

Routers work by attributing a "dynamic IP" to each computer when it connects to the router. Since this IP is dynamic it can, and often does change each time. The router selects which IP to attribute from a list of available IPs called the DHCP range. This range is expressed as either: Starting IP / ending IP, or Starting IP and number of IPs. (192.154.10.1 to 192.154.10.100 or 192.154.10.1 with 100 IPs available). In order to setup a static IP for your computer it is important to select one outside of this range in order to avoid it being attributed to another computer by the router. Finding out what the DHCP range can be hard work since I have no router specific instructions to direct you to the correct menu. You'll have to find it on your own (you may refer to your router's manual for more information).

To enter the router configuration screens : Windows Start button > Run, type "cmd /k; ipconfig /all" WITHOUT the quotes.

  1. From the DOS window that will open, copy the default gateway number to your web browser and hit enter.
  2. In the login window enter your username / password (if you have not set one try: admin/admin admin/blank blank/admin or even blank/blank)
  3. Navigate the menus and screens until you find the DHCP range.
  4. Since many routers have limits on the number of IPs they can handle (regardless of the number of computers connected). Reduce the DHCP range by one. (Reduce the ending IP by one or reduce the number of IP by one). Make a note of the newly available IP (which is outside the range); this is what you will use for a static IP further.
  5. Exit the router configuration and follow the instructions at the Portforward Static IP Guide to setup your operating system to use a static ip.

4. Forwarding your port in the router

The procedure for forwarding a port in the router varies with each make and model of router.

Check your router's label for its manufacturer and model number and select the appropriate model at the Portforward Router Guide.

Beginner's Guide to BitTorrent

What is BitTorrent?

BitTorrent is the global standard for delivering high-quality files over the Internet. With an installed base of over 160 million clients worldwide, BitTorrent technology has turned conventional distribution economics on its head. The more popular a large video, audio or software file, the faster and cheaper it can be transferred with BitTorrent. The result is a better digital entertainment experience for everyone.

BitTorrent is a protocol (a set of rules and description of how to do things) allowing you to download files quickly by allowing people downloading the file to upload (distribute) parts of it at the same time. BitTorrent is often used for distribution of very large files, very popular files and files available for free, as it is a lot cheaper, faster and more efficient to distribute files using BitTorrent than a regular download.

BitTorrent Mainline is a client. A 'client' in this case is a computer program that follows the rules of a protocol. For example, HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) is the protocol used to download web pages and other content - like this page - and your HTTP client (or browser) is the program you use to get those web pages. Some popular browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Opera. To an extent, they all work the same way because they follow the same set of rules. The BitTorrent Mainline client will give you access to the world of content on the protocol in a lightweight, fast and reliable package.

How do I download files using BitTorrent?

Just like you need a URL like 'www.google.com' to go to a web site and download content, you need a 'torrent file', a small file that tells the BitTorrent client the necessary info to download the content you want. This is generally obtained from a torrent website. Many websites offer torrents as one method of downloading files. For example, OpenOffice.org, a free alternative to Microsoft Office, can be downloaded using BitTorrent. Other sites, like legaltorrents.com, offer torrents of all kinds of things - these sites are just repositories of torrents and usually don't actually create any of the content available. They're known as indexes or trackers - there is a subtle difference between the two. (The Wikipedia article on BitTorrent trackers explains the difference.)

Once you've obtained the torrent file from wherever, you simply need to import it into BitTorrent. There are several ways of doing this.

  • Click File then Add Torrent in BitTorrent (or press CTRL+O) and locate the torrent file.
  • Double-click the torrent file. (Only works if you've associated .torrent files with BitTorrent - BitTorrent asks you if it should do this the first time you run it. If you clicked 'No', you can do this by going to Options, then Preferences in BitTorrent, then clicking Associate with .torrent files under Windows Integration.)
  • (advanced) Click File then Add Torrent from URL in BitTorrent (or press CTRL+U), and enter a URL from which the .torrent file can be obtained.

But before you start downloading, make sure you've followed the BitTorrent Connection Guide. It doesn't take long and will help ensure that your torrent experience is faster and more consistent.

BitTorrent finished downloading, but now it says it's Seeding. What does that mean?

Seeding is where you leave your BitTorrent client open after you've finished your download to help distribute it (you distribute the file while downloading, but it's even more helpful if you continue to distribute the full file even after you have finished downloading). Chances are that most of the data you got was from seeds, so help give back to the community! It doesn't require much - BitTorrent will continue seeding until the torrent is removed (right click the torrent, then hit Remove). Proper practice is to seed until the ratio of upload:download is at least 1.00.

Can I really download anything?

BitTorrent is purely a content distribution method, just like a web browser, and similarly, does not incorporate any technology to monitor or restrict your activity. There is also nothing in BitTorrent that prevents anyone from seeing your IP address. Take care to follow your country's laws concerning copyrighted content.

How do I know that someone isn't sending out viruses on BitTorrent?

In short, you don't. You should treat something downloaded with BitTorrent just like any file downloaded from the internet - that is, if you don't trust the source of the file, then you should use caution when opening it. If the torrent site you obtained it from offers comments, be sure to read those first. But regardless of the comments, running a virus scan on the downloaded files is usually a good idea. BitTorrent guarantees that the content you download is not altered from when the torrent was originally created, but if the source files used to create the torrent were already infected, this will provide no protection!

Where can I find out more?

This guide and the User Manual is a good place to start. There is also a lot of BitTorrent reference information available on the internet, and searching for "bittorrent" on Google is a good start. The following sites are particularly useful:

  • Brian's BitTorrent FAQ and Guide - a great resource to all things BitTorrent, with far more info than this page, though some of it is a bit technical.
  • BitTorrent FAQ - Provides a list of common questions and answers and solutions to a number of common problems.
  • BitTorrent User Manual - The main documentation for BitTorrent. Explains everything related to the client. Press F1 while viewing the BitTorrent window, or go to Help -> BitTorrent Help.
  • The BitTorrent specification - Technical information on the way BitTorrent works.
  • BitTorrent.org - a forum for developers to exchange ideas about the direction of the BitTorrent protocol.
